Oil drilling is an important part of the world economy.  Oil drilling has been around for over 1000 years.

The first known oil drilling took place in Chinese oil wells in 347 AD. They only reached about 800 feet deep.  The drilling was done with bits attached to bamboo poles.  The resulting oil was used to evaporate salt water, brine, to produce plain salt.  By the 10th century bamboo pipelines brought oil to salt springs.  Writings from the time discuss homes heated with piped in natural gas.

Oil drilling was prominent in Asia and the middle east.  The Japanese called petroleum burning water.  By the 8th century AD Baghdad had streets covered with tar paving.  Persians used kerosene lamps, distilled from petroleum.  Oil was already a precious commodity.

Marco Polo mentioned oil drilling when he wrote about the middle east.  He visited the area in 1264.  He related seeing oil being carried away by the ship load.  In fact, he said he saw hundreds of ships at a time, carrying away petroleum.  He described abundant fountains of oil.

Percussive oil drilling was the early technique.  Everything was driven into the ground by raw, blunt force.  That was later replaced by rotary drilling which could reach much deeper reservoirs.  One Russian hole, in Kola, made it to 38,000 feet under the Earth.

The Kola project, related to oil drilling, has also been the subject of a legend. The claim is that the hole reached 9 miles before hitting a cavity. Scientists decided to investigate. NASA’s COBY satellite took a very interesting image of the center of the Milky Way galaxy on September 8, 1995.  Due to space dust this would normally not be visible to the naked eye or to a telescope.  But COBE’s infrared imaging captured this amazing image.

January 1, 2000 and January 1, 2001 shared the same image, a drawing really, of the universe as defined in the last millennium. The reason both dates shared this image is that most people considered the year 2000 as the first year of the third millennium. In reality January 1, 2001 was the beginning of millennium #3. NASA decided to just go with both.
