5 SEO Steps For Higher Rankings
For many people, Search Engine Optimization is a complete mystery. As a SEO in Houston it’s my belief that a lot of this is because of all the snake oil spouted out by many so called SEO’s. Some do this because they don’t know any better while some others do it to justify the ongoing fees they charge their Clients. SE Optimization isn’t rocket science people. It’s nothing more than systematically building and optimizing a website the same way over and over to achieve high rankings.
To set the foundation for your website, you should make certain your main keywords are part of the domain name if it’s possible. All things being equal, a site with your keywords in the domain name will outrank one without the keywords in the URL.
Next, the keyword or keyword phrase should be added in the Website name. By doing this, you’re helping the search engines come to a conclusion as to what your Website is about.
Your keywords should also be used as the Title of each page also, or at the bare minimum, some parts of a keyword phrase should be in the page Title. This also helps the search engines figure out what the page is about, what words to rank it for and how relevant it is. As an added benefit, the page Title should also be used in your H1 tag. Search engines rely a great deal on the H1 to tell them what the page is about and how relevant it is. If you’re using a web design company company, make certain they know how to do this one little thing.
Now that you have your domain, Website Title (Name) and Page Titles optimized with your keywords, it’s critical that your keywords show up a few times in the content of the page. You should place the main keyword of the page somewhere in the first paragraph and once or twice more in the article somewhere, especially near the end of the page. A few more times between the first and last paragraph won’t hurt, whatever you do, make certain to use them in the first part of the page and again at the end.
Lastly, probably the most important thing of SEO actually takes place off site. In my opinion, the most important thing in obtaining a higher ranking is backlinks leading back to your page on your Website. And it’s not enough to just get backlinks, these links back to your site need to have your keywords as the Anchor text of the backlinks.
How important are backward links? I have ranked quite a few Websites that didn’t have the keywords in the URL, plus I can rank one that doesn’t have keywords in the Website Title, Page Title and in the Content (although it’s much, much harder to do), but without anchored backward links going to your web page, {it is nearly impossible} to to get higher rankings in the search engines for any search phrases that are the least bit competitive.
