A Short Freezer Buying Guide

Our freezers are the silent workers in our homes. It operates year in and year out, requiring nothing other than a constant supply of electricity. In time it will need its replacement.

We will talk about few factors that will determine what kind of freezer will you decide to buy for youself.

We will talk about the freezer size first. And it of course depends on what you need. Usually, most people purchase a freezer that is too large. These people decide for a freezer upon their perceived usage, not real facts. Their reasoning is: We “might” need a larger one in case there “may be” a special at the grocery store on something. The reality though is that most freezers end up being operated only half full.

Do not forget that you have only six weeks to consume all the food from the freezer. If you store your food any longer then that, it will definitely be dehydrated, no matter what you do with her. As the moisture leaves the food both taste and nutritional value will be lowered. Anything that is stored more then a month and a half is considered wasted .

For example, try to remember how many food or ice cream you wasted because crystals appeared. That ice forming inside the package is a sign of dehydration.

Freezers are efficient when it comes to energy consumption, but they will still increase your power bills.

You will spend more electricity with a upright freezer. The reason for this are the opened doors that let the cold air out. And with time, it will run more often. Also today’s uprights are often frost free, which by their nature consume much more electricity. Because we don’t have to defrost it, we have to pay for that advantage.

Since the cold air is heavier, it will remain inside the freezer if the doors are opened from above, and this is why small chest freezers are great energy savers. But, chest types are manual and will need to be shut down and defrosted once a year.

Because we put our freezers where they can’t be seen, it is not necesary for them to look nice. Neither do most consumers feel a necessity for them to have many options.
Most are simply regarded as large storage boxes where frozen foods are kept for later usage.

But in last ten years or so manufacturers are making freezers with more and more features. There are a lot of features you can find in freezers made today; quick freeze, push button control, frost free and digital temperature display.
