How should I listen to my audio books?
The beauty with audio books is that you have more than one option for listening to them.
There are many options when it comes to listening to to audio books, you are not forced into one option.
If you are someone who likes listening while seated on your favorite couch or seated on your desk, listening to your audio book on your cassette tape player (if the audio book is in audiocassette tape, of course) is the option for you.
But if you have a desktop or laptop computer, you might prefer listening to your audio book from it.
Pretty much all Personal computers have software built in for playing back audio books. If your PC doesn't have any (very unlikely), you can still download them completely free on the Internet. The best two free digital audio players that you can download are:
- RealOne Player: It can be downloaded completely free from their website - http://www.Real.com
- Windows Media Player: It can also be downloaded completely free from their website - http://www.Microsoft.com
But if you would rather listen to your audio book while on a walk, running, on the way to work, going around the house, going around the shops (and many more) then a portable audio player is the right way to go, preferably with an earphone.
The advantages of portable audio players have made their market grow as more and more people are starting to use them.
The most common form of these portable audio playback devices are the normal audio CD players or CD-ROM devices. You can carry these around with you while you do your household chores, exercise, jog or commute to and fro work.
The more advanced form of portable players, used for playing audio books, include;
— Audio-ready PDAs (Personal Digital Assistants). Some of these PDAs include Casio CASSIOPEIA and Compaq iPAQ. Both can be pretty expensive, costing as much as about $500 for the Compaq iPAQ and about $400 for the Casio CASSIOPEIA.
— Compatible Portable Audio Players. Some of these include the Creative’s NOMAD Jukebox 3 and the SONICblue’s Rio 900. These are cheaper than PDAs. For instance, you could purchase the SONIC blue's Rio 900 for around $250 from websites like Sonicblue.com
Finally, like I said in the start of this article, whatever tool you decide to use in listening to your audio books will depend largely on “how” you prefer listening to your audio books.
For example, the 'young and restless' teenagers can't be without the PDAs. I bet you wouldn't too if you were their age, right? But for the "aged and rusty" who just prefer the ease of being seated on their favorite couch, nothing can be better than listening to their favorite audio books from their "good old" cassette tape player!
An excellent source that I have found for audio book downloads is Spoken Network. You can find them at:

Audio Books Can Be Fun
Enjoying a good audio book depends a lot on the interpretation of the storyline by the narrator.
And, thankfully the quality of audio books is generally excellent.
It is true to say that some books do not lend themselves to the spoken word and can be dreary, difficult to follow and if they contain many characters, the narrator may not be able to portray them properly.I listened to an historical account of the First World War recently and because of the many dates and events mentioned, I’m sorry to say that I gave up on the audiobook and reverted to the written word.
However on the flip side of the coin, we have fully dramatized productions which do lend themselves completely to the audio book format. And, for those who are game for a laugh, there are many radio recording of classic comedy show audio books like The Goons now available as an MP3 download. These comedy shows are evergreen and are well worth listening to again and again. Who can ever forget Manuel “I’m from Barcelona.” in the Fawlty Towers series.
For those studying English literature, high school or college, there are many titles from their reading lists available for immediate download, including audio book articles.
The more notable of these are Shakespeare’s plays which have been converted from radio plays to audio books. The benefit of these productions is that the listener can engage much more with characters of the play which aids their understanding and retention of the plot.
Many of these productions include well known character actors of film and radio. And, lots of the audiobooks contain musical backgrounds, sound effects and these add to the listening experience
I read stories these days of commuters getting stuck in traffic for many hours. The audiobook would make an ideal traveling companion instead of listening to all the gloom and doom on the radio. I’m sure many of us would like to have the time to read more, but with the pace of life increasing this does not seem possible. Well, think again. How much time is wasted in the car, bus, train or at the airport?
There is a category of audiobooks which I think is badly overlooked, and that is the study of languages. This is one area where these books on audio excel themselves. The main languages are broken down into several parts, and range from easy phrases to more complicated conversations. The big benefit is that the narration is done by native speakers, and so the problem of correct pronunciation is eliminated.
Mummy, are we there yet?
How many times have you heard your 4 year old ask this question from the back seat of the car as you drive the last hundred miles home after the summer vacation.
Before we hit the highway, the younger ones were already fidgeting. And, despite the fact that the holiday home was still four hours away, the question kept coming every five minutes. If there’s one thing that can upset the older children who have no choice but to be seated beside the wee brats, this is it
The last thing the weary driver needs as she gives her full attention to the busy lanes, is someone distracting her.
Distractions are a must but not for the driver- for the kids.
I Spy with my little eye is one such game that will keep them occupied for a short while well, that is providing everyone is concentrating.
She spied something beginning with w s and of course we all thought this meant windscreen. However after many frustrating miles the answer was not forthcoming And what do you know, her nibs got her steering wheel and her windscreen muddled up! She lost some brownie points for that.
So when ‘I Spy’ is played out, what then? One option is to play Charades, and this can be good fun for a while too.
So, what is the long term solution to prevent four energetic kids from getting bored?
This summer, we found the answer in an audiobook article. We had to dig a bit into our hard earned cash but it was worth it. Four MP3 players later and we now had the right tools to silence the little lambs!
And, silence it was because the audiobooks we chose were fairly lengthy, now, not as long as War and Peace (60 hours) but long enough to keep the little darlings quiet for most of the journey.
The important thing to remember is not to download the same story on each iPod or MP3 player. Instead give them all something different so that they can swap them around eventually.
I would advise you to allow the children some choice here too, so that they do not feel forced to listen to something they might not be too interested in.
It even makes sense to look ahead to the English curriculum of your local schools for inspiration. Huckleberry Finn seems to be an evergreen.
In years to come, it’s possible to turn idle time into productive time by listening to classic literature or foreign language audiobooks on the way to school.
Anyway, here are some of the audio books we selected: The Book of Pirates, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, The Chaos King, Groosam Grange, Coraline, and Alice in Wonderland. And, there are plenty of titles for the adults as well.
Foreign Language Audio Books
Anyone traveling abroad will benefit greatly from downloadable language courses on audio books. And, once mastered, the person with a second language will have a distinct advantage when studying at college
What’s the benefit of audiobooks?
Well, they are very handy in that they can be transferred to MP3 players and this enables the listener to learn a foreignlanguage at any time of day or night
One of the most popular times for listening to audio books is whilst commuting to and from work.Another popular listening time is while jogging. At the gym, or walking along country lanes, the audio books come into their own.
So, whats so special about language audio books?
The main advantage is the well thought out manner of the presentation, and the fact that with good audio books like the Dr Pimsleur range, the narrators are themselves native speakers. Dr Pimsleur is a expert linguist who developed a technique of learning a foreign language based on anticipation and memory training. His courses are based on the language learning of an infant.
In the language audio books, the tutor will speak a sentence and ask the listener to repeat it. This method allows the language student ample time to revise their pronunciation. In addition, students get to know the sound of the words and can repeat key phrases with confidence that the pronunciation is correct. The memory training is built into the course in a very subtle way.
There are very many languages now downloadable thanks to MP3 technology. The mainstream languages which are on most high school curriculums are presented in audio books format. On top of that there are many language audio books for non English speakers. Some examples include,, Arabic, Cantonese, Haitian, along with the modern European languages
With advances in technology, the MP3 Players and iPods are a must for the modern student
Learning a second language is all about being reminded of certain words instead of the boring system of learning by rote. Without a doubt, language learning can be very enjoyable.
