Do you like fishing?  Have you heard of the Kenai River in Alaska?  Kenai River fishing is an angler’s dream come true, actually the mother lode of salmon fishing.  The river runs an impressive 82 miles, from Kenai Lake in southern Alaska to the Pacific ocean, at Cook’s Inlet.

Buddy is the second biggest of the Pacific salmon species and are easily distinguished by their red to purplish blue color and horizontal bars. They also have a particularly particular and pronounced set of teeth.

Sockeye – this salmon is very red in color and may often be mistaken for the Coho due to the coloration. Sockeye spend up to 2 years in a fresh water lake before moving out the ocean, and are unique in this aspect. They have any distinct spots and the female is less brilliantly colored than the male. Male Sockeyes have a noticeable hump on their back just in front of the dorsal fin.

Kokanee – this is the actually land locked salmon, living its complete live cycle in a fresh water lake, never venturing to the salt water. In physical description they are almost identical the Sockeye, being red in color and males having the dorsal hump.

When learning about salmon fishing and fish identification it is a great idea to bring a salmon identification book and remember to practice conservation and return fish to the water whenever boundaries are reached.

Below is an easy to follow list of basic fishing gear I recommend to get started. You won’t need expensive or complicated gear to catch a fish. It’s no secret that fishing tackle companies turn out fishing tackle to catch the Fishermen’s eye instead of fish. The Rods and Reels I used to catch fish all those years ago still catch fish today. In fact, it may even work better today seeing how the fish haven’t seen this particular offerings over and over again.

Fishing tackle to catch Fish shouldn’t be expensive or complicated. Simple set-ups work best for any fish. I remember a Bass fishing trip a Buddy and I took to a local lake many years ago. The weather was hot that day, even for June. We gave up fishing somewhere aroun twelve o’clock and was loading the boat on the trailer when this Old Man and 2 kids came motoring up to the boat ramp.

When they were done loading their boat, I walked over to find they had a limit of Black Bass. The biggest one was 6 and a half pounds and none were under 2 pounds. I walked over and asked the Old Man what they had used for bait, seeing how my Buddy and I were skunked that morning and we had been using the latest equipment and lures on the Market. The Old Man smiled and showed me his Minnow bucket and said “We’re using Bass minnows”! I also couldn’t keep from noticing their very basic fishing rods and reels. Their simple set up had out produced the newest technology and presentations on the market at the time!

The basic fishing equipment you’ll have to have in order to begin catching Bass or any other fish is a Rod and Reel, line and bait. That’s all you need. Where do you get your tacke at, your local sporting goods store or Wal-Mart has more than enough tackle to get you going. I’d suggest a Rod and Reel combo like the Zebco 33 and a matching rod. Don’t overlook the Internet if you want to save even more.

Level wind reels are not good fishing reels to begin with. They can be difficult for beginners to use and are pricey. Spinning reels should be avoided also. If not used properly, they’ll leave you with a mess that you’ll not likely soon forget.

Now on your equipment list comes the type of line you’ll be using. If you bought a rod and reel combo, chances are it came with line already on it. If not, or you want to change the line, then I’d suggest a 10lb line from either Stren or Trilene. There are other manufacturers out there, but these two have been around a long time and manufacture quality fishing line.

Bait selection comes next. Don’t fret, it’s just as simple as selecting your rod and reel. Start with live bait and work your way up to artificials. You’ll catch more fish and bigger ones on live bait. When you’re in the Fishing Dept. of your favorite store, look for Eagle Claw live bait hooks in the 1/0 to 3/0 sizes and get a few packs. Next try and find some weights. You can generally find the ones that come several sizes to a package. Split shot is a great weight for beginners. Next, check out the floats. I like to use the Balsa wood floats. I use the slip floats. These slide up and down the line for easy adjustment. They’re held in place at the top by a knot or bobber stop. You can now get out on your favorite body of water and start fishing!

This is all you’ll need in order to catch fish. This set up should cost you less than a $100 and once you have some experience under your belt, you’ll find it’s pretty easy to outfish the local Pro’s. The fishing companies have made it seem like catching a Bass is nearly impossible unless you’re using the latest and greatest gear on the Market. Don’t believe the marketing hype. Catching fish is easy and doesn’t take a lot of sophisticated equipment!
