Keeping children entertained during the school holidays – Eight inexpensive ideas

When the kids get home from school in the afternoon and say ‘I’m bored’, at least you can point them towards doing their homework – however – when they come home on that last day of term – you know that it won’t be long until you hear ‘I’m bored’ several times a day!

Times are tough economically but entertaining kids has never been an expensive enterprise -  so here are eight ideas to keep your children busy, creative and active during these long summer months.

Milk Jug Bird Feeders – Rinse out an empty plastic gallon milk jug with lid. Cut a window in the front of the jug, and make two small poke holes for the perches. Insert sticks for perches and fill the bottom of the jug with bird seed. Depending on the ages of the child, let them figure out the best way to secure the perch and if they wish they can decorate the birdfeeder before hanging it on the balcony or in the garden.

Aluminum Can Crafts – Paint an empty, rinsed out tuna can with acrylic paint or spray paint.Decorate with glitter, glue, buttons, stickers and any other odds and ends you might find. Once completed these make cute holders for barrettes, pony tail holders, paper clips, rubber bands, keys, jewelry etc. Apply the same idea to an empty soup can to make a pen or pencil holder. These are great to give to dad to take into the office.

Coloring in – Coloring in was the staple activity of many summer holidays when I was little. If you have access to the internet, have some paper and a printer, it means you don’t even have to pay for a coloring book. When it comes to coloring pictures, you really can’t go wrong with Disney and at sites like Disney Coloring Pages you’ll find the best Disney coloring page

Coffee Can Stilts – Using two 1-pound coffee cans, turn each can upside down so that the plastic lid is on the bottom. Using a scredriver, an adult should poke two holes – one each side of the can. Using some rope, thread through holes in the cans. Tie off inside the can and practice walking on them. Kids cand ecorate the cans if they so wish.

Jar Candles – Keep aside the stubs of candles. When you have several saved, melt them together in a double boiler. Color the wax by adding bits of wax crayon to the mixture. Pour the wax into glass jelly or mason jars or metal cans. Use cotton yarn for wicks and decorate the outside of the candle holder with acrylic paints. Once the sun sets – light your candle…but always make sure that you surpervise your children around flames!

Paper Towel Rain Makers – Young kids love noise makers such as maracas. Paint, color and decorate the paper towel rolls. Cover one end of a paper towel roll with waxed paper (for extra noise!) and close it off with a rubber band or three. Pour a handful or three of dried beans in the open end and close the open end the same way as the other. Poke toothpicks through the rolls at different intervals to add a ‘rain shaker’ sound – like the ones the aboriginal people of Australia create.

Paper Towel Tube Holders – Decorate a paper towel tube with paint, markers,  stickers and crayons. Once decorated this is  a colorful carrying tube. Roll up drawings and put them inside the tube to take them to their teacher, grandparents, friends or relatives.

Pet Rocks – Pet rocks have stood the test of time and any rock can be turned into a pet rock with a lick of paint and some googly eyes. First, find smooth, flat or round rocks. Be sure to clean off any mud or sand and dry completely before starting. Paint with acrylic paints. Decorate faces by adding yarn for hair, googly eyes, glitter and any other bits and pieces you like. I always add freckles on my Pet Rocks!

Enjoy the summer holidays!

Coloring and drawing in children – the cultural differences

Culture plays a large role in  many things – from what we eat to how we dress – and it even has an effect on the minutae of life – like whether or not drawing will enter into a child’s repertoire of behavior.

For example, studies have shown that  Taiwanese-American and Chinese-American parents tend to plan more drawing time for their children than their  European-American  counterpart parents do. As a result of more time spent drawing, Taiwanese-American and Chinese-American children’s drawings have been deemed more advanced than those of their counterparts.

According to  studies carried out in 1983, when children are provided with drawing materials and encouragement they tend to create works that reflect their particular culture – and each culture has its own ‘style’. For example, French children tend to spend a good deal of time on drawing, filling the entire page with large, colorful designs,  drawings by Japanese children  meanwhile tend to be more complex, harmonious and complete than drawings by North-American children. Children from the island of Bali meanwhile, typically use many small marks to draw complex, colorful designs which fill the page.

While many cultures use and value drawing as art, there are a few cultures that show no evidence of drawing at all.

The children from the island of Ponape (in Micronesia) usually have no prior drawing experience. Yet when  a recent study was carried out, those Ponape children that were given drawing materials  tended to draw  by starting in the center of the page making shapes that connected outward like  groups of linked bubbles – they also tended not to fill the page and used only one color per drawing.

Interestingly, when children from cultures that don’t include drawing in their children’s life are first introduced to the tools, they tend to experiment, scribble, or attempt realistic drawings right from the start. There seems to be great deal of variation in first attempts. However, in general, it has been found that children tend to draw from a cultural perspective, imitating the designs reflected in fabrics, architecture or other aspects of the adult culture including symbol systems such as written letters or characters and numerals.

Culture therefore both confines and defines the art of children.

Children from ‘First World’ countries like Europe and the USA are given opportunities to draw and color and are encouraged to do so by their parents, teachers and other caregivers. Material is plentiful too with paper, crayons, paints, coloring books and even online resources in plentiful supply. Little boys tend to enjoy coloring pictures that represent what he sees every day such as cars, trucks and machinery while little girls enjoy coloring images from fairy tales and   princesses and at sites like Princess Coloring Pages you’ll find the best name coloring pages

With both encouragement and resources a-plenty, our children are very lucky to have both the means and the support to express themselves creatively through drawing and colouring.

Tips to Get Kids Reading this Summer

Book List for Summer Reading!

You hear the groans from students and parents alike as every June the teachers merrily wave the students on their way to summer vacation with cries of, “Have fun! Enjoy your break! Swim safely! Read! Read! Read! Don’t forget your book checklist.”

Why do schools do this? Research shows that children who read during the summer holidays do better in school. It’s that simple. These students not only become stronger readers, but also show improvement in writing and spelling. By reading during those long, idle summer months students are doing themselves a favor. But try telling that to someone who just wants to sleep, play and hang out!

How can we encourage summer reading?

The first step might be a difficult one – helping your child find the right books. Forget your own ideas about what constitutes a “classic” and let them choose their own books from the list, if one has been provided by a teacher. If your child has not been given a summer reading list, create one by browsing online. Look for Web sites that highlight award-winning books, like mommypicks.com. Make sure your reader has a lot of input in the list you create together. If they have a vested interest in the book, they’re more likely to stick with it ’til the end?

Next, head to the store, library, or online bookstore with two or three ideas in mind. Explain that while a cover may look cool, or a title may sound catchy, it helps to read the back cover blurb or the online summary to see if the story sounds interesting. Next—and for some of you this may be the biggest challenge—let them go to it. Let them browse around. Stay close in case there are questions, but choosing one’s own book gives the reader ownership. That alone may go a long way to getting the book read without a fight.

How to get the pages turning …

Once the books arrive at home, your best bet to a hassle free experience is to share the reading. Depending on age and ability parents can read the book to the child, alternate reading one page with each other, or listen to your child read aloud for a while and you finish up the chapter. Readers of all ages love to have a story read to them—some just show it more than others.

This is a lot of work – is it worth it? Studies show that children with parents who are actively involved in their schooling process do better at school. By taking an interest in what your child is reading and participating in the experience, you are showing them that reading is something you also enjoy.

Give your reader a voice!

Still not working? Go over the story together one chapter at a time and then talk about it so you are sure they were comprehending the story line. Try not to pepper them with direct questions! Instead, ask your reader for clarification. For example, say you didn’t get the point about something a character did, and can they help you understand. Their answer, as they roll their eyes, will let you know if they are “getting it.”

Another way to get students to read is to have them record themselves reading the book. It is a long process and one you are best not to get too involved in as students like to read the story, listen to themselves, laugh hilariously and then re-read the story again but this time “with feeling.” Once done your reader can play the recording back to you as they show you the pictures and enjoy your reaction. If it is a chapter book, this process will be a long one, so get things going them by reading the first chapter and then have them record the next one. You may not have the energy to keep recording it, but by this time you are already into chapter three and, with luck, the reader will be hooked.

Most important of all, show that you are enjoying the experience of reading. You never know, you may discover some new authors and hidden gems that will give your “classics” a run for their money.

Claire Fripp is an English teacher who has been reading to her students and her three children for 22 years.

Are children still interested in golf?

The past few years has shown less and less younger people playing sports like golf. Why could this possibly be happening? It certainly isn’t down to kids not wanting to use the electric golf trolleys.
One of the major reasons and the reason that detered me from the sport is that one of the parents play the game and it is seen as a older generations game. It can also be said that if a youngster is going to play golf they are bound to be picked on if they are seen wearing some of the outfits golfers have to wear on some of the courses. The fact is that when I was at school the people who played golf were only friends with the other golf players which was either out of choice or bullying which is wrong.

Why is it that golf is seen as a old mans sport and not seen like football, tennis, rugby and all the other high profile sports. Although golf is a high profile sport, most children would sadly prefer to play football or rugby than give the sport a chance. To a certain extent this is untrue as I know an 8yr old boy who loves the game and plays it every Saturday. The only problem is ge wishes to play football and go to gardening club rather than play golf. I really do not see how gardening can possibly be better than playing golf? Is the game really seen to be that boring to the younger people? Although not liking the sport myself I also do not like football or any other of the major sports so i'm certainly not biased against the sport.

In all honesty golf would certainly benefit the kids of today more so than a lot of other sports as it has standards that must be kept to. The great thing about golf is that it would actually help any child who liked the sport as unlike other sports the majority of people who play it don't swear or behave like a complete idiot. Another plus side is it inspires young people to play the game as well as they can and fairly as the golfers themselves really only get money for playign hte tournaments rather than on a stupidly high wage per week.
So charge up those golf batteries kids and get playing!

Looking Out For Your Kids While Using Games Online

We are faced with additional challenges compared to those that faced our parents. When we were young and we were playing outside of the house, they were most likely worried that we could get hurt while playing, either scrape our knees or get sprained or they were worried that a stranger might talk to us and we will reply. Those are all things that our parents would be forced deal with back in the day. Now that we are parents ourselves, on top of these run of the mill problems, we now face additional worries whenever our children play online games. Online gaming usually offer two things that you might need to protect your child from. One is that some online games, since they offer anonymity, can be accessed by pedophiles and can talk to your child. Second is that griefers, also known as cyber bullies, can target and can make your chilled extremely miserable.

Online gaming usually has a chatting option wherein our little one can chat with others. It is usually used to talk about strategy or barter items in the game but it can also be used to talk about non-game related stuff like TV or even about personal life. To ensure your childrens safety online here are a few basic tips that I would suggest implementing in your house to protect them from grifers and pedophiles alike, just do these before you go and find halo wars or some other games:

1.    Make sure your child understands – When your implement rules and boundaries on online gameplay be sure to let them know the purpose. Let them know that it’s not an issue of trust between you and them, but your skepticism of people online.

2.    Relocate the computer – Put games and computers in a public area of the house where you can easily supervise your kids while they are online. This will ensure that you can check up on the gaming activities of your child once in a while. Also, if the computer is in a well trafficked area, your child will also be able to interact with people in the real world.

3.    Teach – Tell your child to never give out the following information to people online:
a. Real name
b. Contact details like address and phone number
c. Location
d. Passwords
e. Social security numbers

4.    Make sure that they use a pseudonym as a log in ID.

5.    Ignore – Ignore both strangers and bullies online. Strangers like this are looking for easy prey, if you just don’t respond they will go away after a few seconds.

6.    Keep above those below you – Tell your child that if a griefer is very persistent to never attack him the way they tried to attack your child. This will only make matters worse.

7.    Ask an adult – Let your kids know that if they are faced with social problems online they should always come to your first. Tell them that even if you are busy, even if you are not even at home, that they can call you up in the office or in your cell phone to ask help or to let you know what scared them.

How I Get My Boys Away From The Television

All my kids talk about getting every year for Christmas is video games if they don’t go downstairs and find Gears of War 2 under our new flocked christmas tree I do not know how they will survive. It makes me a little nuts since I do all I can to get my kids outdoors. I would much rather give them a pair of new skates or golf clubs then some mind numbing thing that will enchant them in front of the television. Oh well I guess you just learn that kids are kids. Arguing with the boys over “appropriate” lengths of time is just too much work.

After saying that I guess I should get to the point that I’ve developed a few ways to control their television addiction. I do a couple of things in an effort to force them outside. First off I limit their time every day to one hour (they can earn more). I have discovered that limiting the time is key to everything else because then they know time above and beyond that is to be earned. I do give them some ways to earn more time in front of the television. That leads me into my second trick. They have a few options to earn more television time, either playing outside or doing some chores for me. I like the chores option because it is nice for me to have a few less things to do, and the reward for them isn’t bad either. I intentionally made it with the purpose of them getting around one hour of television time for every one hour they spend on chores.

The number two way they get more television time is by spending some of their time outside. When they go outside and play nice I allow them 15 minutes of gaming to every hour of outside time. Like I say this isn’t a huge payoff, but I also don’t really think asking them to be outside is a huge thing to ask. That option works the best of their long Saturdays where they spend the majority of the day outside anyway. They spend all day outside on Saturdays and earn themselves a couple of hours in front of the television. I do not even mind if they play a night of video games after a good day outside.

That being said I’m ok with one or two ending up under flocked christmas tree this year if it has the effect of getting my brats outside and getting some stuff done around the house for me. I hope they like their games, because I am going to like my “gift” of a little more control around the house.
