What is Obesity?

Obesity definition is very straightforward. Obesity is simply defined as being overweight. It signifies that enormous amounts of fat are accumulated in your organism, that results in the excess body weight. A healthy person’s weight has to be in balance with his or her height, which signifies within the body mass index (BMI). The perfect BMI is within 18.5 to 24.9. So, in clinical terms Body mass index of 30 and above is defined as obesity.

Obesity has bad effects on the general health and lifestyle of a person. Individuals who are stout become very inactive as they discover it hard to enter in plenty of everyday activities. They cannot move easily, they are all the time tired and they are in danger of becoming sick with different types of sicknesses ranging from cardiovascular, cancer, diabetes, and many others.

What are the causes of obesity

It is already recognized that most general reasons for obesity may be inactive lifestyle, high intake of calories and scientific reasons as well (like psychiatric, medical and genetic causes). As previously mentioned, a inert and idle way of living is the first on the list of causes of obesity. A person finds it hard to exercise or go in for some sport, which gradually has negative influence on his weight making him obese.

Another cause of obesity is genetics or heredity. It has been discovered that the gene for obesity has been circulated from generation to generation. Hence, the kids whose parents are obese show a tendency to be obese. Individuals who have genetic factors to become obese have many problems with losing weight in the long term.
Moreover, obesity may appear due to some psychological problems. It entails that people show a tendency of overeating themselves when they are grieving, upset, infuriated, even weary with something which, consequently, causes obesity. Also, several diseases and conditions like Cushing’s syndrome, Hypothyroidism, Depression, and different neurologic problems lead to overeating that in turn leads to the accumulation of excessive fat in the body.

But, the most standard reason for overeating is because they don’t actually have enough time to take healthy food as they are filled with many duties. Disorganized schedules have led to the using up of fast and processed food, which, on one hand, don’t contain sufficient amount of vitamins and minerals and, on the other, has too much calories.

So, how can an individual eliminate obesity?

Obese people consider that they will be fat always and that they will never lose weight. Of course this is not true, and the solution does exist. You can easily cure obesity providing that you are disciplined, have a strong will, and on condition that you comply with the rules that you must follow before you decide to go on a diet. It is most important to recognize the problem and then go to your doctor who will give you professional advice taking into consideration your obesity issue.

Luckily, there is a wide range of weight loss programs nowadays, that give extraordinary results. Or you can simply pick out some other methods that fit your needs, among which several can be very radical like obesity operation or intake of anti-obesity drugs.

Fresh Food Loses Value With Food Processing

It is now well recognized that obesity and overweight has spread amongst all sections in the developed nations and amongst the richer sections in the developing nations. It has become a lifestyle problem. Lowered physical activities along with the type of food that are consumed are the main cause of the problem. Processed food has been displacing fresh food in the departmental stores and the super markets. Processed food is convenient for the people caught up with the busy urban life as they are easy to prepare.

The entry and predominance of beverages and junk food or fast food in our dietary practices are now reckoned to be the primary cause of obesity and overweight. The weight loss market too has been expanding alongside the increase in the number of the overweight. The market for various solutions such as the restructured diet, diet food, herbal appetite suppressant, medication and also surgeries is expanding. There are also a variety of publications and e-books on how to burn belly fat and how to burn away fat and build muscles. Professionals and fitness centers too offer advices.

The fresh food is processed by the food industry using modern processing technologies to prolong the shelf life and freshness and to protect from infection by bacteria. The techniques deployed by the industry include pasteurization, autoclaving, cooling, salting, drying and separation of various components. A wide range of processed food is made available through the stores to the consumer to choose from. These require very little preparation or no preparation before consumption.

During processing various separation techniques as pressing, centrifugation and milling are adopted to extract flour, juices, oils etc besides amino acids, minerals, vitamins and fatty acids. Invariably the nutritional content of the food changes with all these processing. Often food is heated losing some vitamins, phytochemicals and other substances. The processed food loses nutritional value. That is why processed food are fortified and enriched with some important nutrients. Whatever be the case, the processed food has inferior or lower nutritional value as compared to fresh wholesome foods. Fresh foods are richer in GI starches, sodium, potassium, fiber, vitamins, and unoxidized essential fatty acids. The processed food is found to often contain harmful substances as trans fatty acids and oxidized fats.

Obesity And What You Can Do

Obesity and your health, handle and avoid with easy exercises, why? Obesity is America is said to be out of control and some call it an epidemic, due to the rise in the number of people suffering from obesity in the last few years. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), a person is deemed to be obese if he has a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 30 or above. This means that the person consumes more food than is required by the body and does not burn enough calories. As a result the person would suffer from diabetes, heart disease and metabolic syndrome to name a few. The main causes of obesity are said to be unhealthy eating habits and a sedentary lifestyle. The main cause of obesity is bad food habit and lack of exercise however, hormonal changes are also at fault.

The obesity statistics are somewhat staggering. It is said that nearly two-thirds of American adults above the age of 20 , that is 66 percent of the population, are said to be obese, according to results from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES)  . From which 33 percent are women and 30 percent are men. Another survey by NHANES shows that the prevalence rates of children aged between 2 to 5 years has increased from 5 percent to 13.9 percent over the last few years. A lot of children too are therefore facing a high risk of being obese. This risk can be seen in another study showing obesity statistics, conducted by CDC which showed that children who are overweight between the ages of 10-15 years are very likely to be obese at the age of 25.

Obesity statistics are alarming in America however the positive point is that it can be prevented if correct actions are taken. The deaths caused by obesity only becomes secondary to deaths caused by tobacco and right now it is the second most leading cause of death in the United States. An estimated 300, 000 deaths are said to be caused as a result of obesity each year. As stated earlier, diabetes is very common among those who are obese, particularly type 2 diabetes. 80 percent of those suffering from type 2 diabetes are said to be related to obesity according to obesity statistics by the Wellness International Network Limited.

Looking at these obesity statistics it is clear as to why people refer to the situation in America as a growing epidemic. People should therefore become more aware of their eating and exercising habits and should make an active effort to change their unhealthy lifestyles if they are to prevent these obesity statistics from becoming even worse in the years to come.

The Worldwide Pandemic Of Overweight Children Must Be Addressed Straight Away

Lately the childhood obesity rate is more and more prominent on the news. If a child is obese it can lead to serious health issues for the child like diabetes, dyslipidemia, heart health issues, lack of sufficient bone density, sleep disorders and problems, psychological problems and symptoms and gastro-intestinal spasms. These abnormalities will in all likelyhood continue into puberty and adulthood. Research has unfortunately shown that obese children has a much higher risk than other people to turn into obese adults.

Despite all the above, it is possible for parents to make a positive impact on the lifestyle of their offspring and give them the guidance that will ensure a happy and healthy adulthood.

What is the role needed from parents to make a contribution to the prevention of obesity in their child? Parents must address the causes of childhood obesity. Parents must pay attention to their kids and help them to feel that they belong and that they are in a secure environment. If your child is neglected by you there is an increased possibility of obesity compared to other children. Your kids should not be pressured into eating more than they want to during meals, you will train your child’s metabolism to function at a higher level than what would be healthy for the child.

Do not emphasize too much the amount of food eaten. It is much more important that the child must eat healthy food and then also get sufficient exercise to burn of the calories. Your kid will acquire abnormal eating behaviours if you are going to be constantly fussing about food intake.

Your child should not spend so much time in front of the telly. You will find that his or her weight is almost directly proportional to the time sitting motionless in front of the tv, watching television is obviously going to reduce physical activities by the child, it then consequently also reduces the metabolism of the body. The junk food commercials on television also affects children, and they are encouraged to eat more junk food and drink soft drinks that will have one result only and that is increased weight.

It is a myth that mothers to be have to eat for two people, too much food while you are pregnant just dramatically increases the possibility that both you and your unborn child will in future become obese. Your newborn should be breastfeeded for a period of not less than one year. With your infant still very young, a greater emphasis should be on fruits, and vegetables and grains while all the time monitoring to see if the youngster is really hungry before feeding it.

If the risk that your child will become obese is high, you should consider using fat free milk instead of full cream milk. Avoid cane sugar and snacks that contain excessive fat, because they are high in low nutritional value calories. For kids that are still of school going age, you must enforce rules as to how much time can be spent each day watching television, snacks may only be of the healthy variety, food treats will be allowed only occasionally and generally good food habits must be maintained.

The child obesity epidemic is not static, it increases with each year that passes and, since the early eighties, there has been an alarming increase. The childhood obesity epidemic poses a great risk to our children’s children, and it must now be halted in its tracks all over the developed world.

Discover The Facts You Need To Know Completely Prior To Having Liposuction

Liposuction can also be referred to as lipectomy (“suction-assisted fat removal”), lipoplasty (“fat modeling”) or liposculpture and is a style of body contouring. To put it another way fat is extracted from different parts of the body in an attempt to achieve a chosen shape. Liposuction has been available since the nineteen sixties but it is only since the 1990’s that it has become so immensely popular. Prior to this the techniques practiced were less successful, often with mixed results. It was in the 1990’s that ultrasound was incorporated into the liposuction technique, which made it far less difficult to extract large amounts of fat. This was achieved by first liquefying the fat.

It is not uniquely women who book appointments with liposuction surgeons but men do too. Twenty years ago this was virtually unheard of, but these days men are commonly having the exact same beauty procedures as women. Men commonly wish to have specific places on the body enhanced, for example, abdomen, male breasts and flanks, women usually want to reshape such regions of the body as the abdomen, hips and thighs. Whatever area one chooses to have sculptured it would be clever to remember that all cosmetic surgery is not without risk. Sadly there are negative aspects to having liposuction, if an extreme amount of fat is removed, the area can sometimes be lumpy, or appear to have deep contours in the skin.

One incredibly important point concerning liposuction, which mustn’t ever be forgotten, is that it should never be used as an alternative to exercise and diet. There are a great deal of contraindications to liposuction and being grossly overweight is one of them. An aesthetic surgeon will commonly refuse to carry out the procedure on anybody who is morbidly or severely obese. This is not discriminatory, but purely a medical decision based upon facts. Folk who are obese are more often than not very unfit and not generally in  good health, both of which cancels out one’s eligibility for the procedure. There are also risks with anesthesia if you are overweight. The optimal candidates for liposuction are those patients who are in generally good shape and healthy, and who who do not smoke.

Liposuction is performed either; using local anesthesia with sedation, general anesthesia, or local anesthesia. at the start of the operation the surgeon will make very small cuts in the skin at the sites where the extra fat is to be extracted. Often the fat is removed using a cannula and aspirator (a hollow tube and a suction device) During the surgery, several points of importance are taken into consideration which limit the amount of fat which can removed without risk. The safety issues are not only related to the amount of fat extracted, but also to the overall health of the patient, and the choice of anesthesia.

Saturated Fats and Trans Fats as the Main Cause of Cholesterol

Saturated fat is the major trigger from the elevated cholesterol level. The saturated fat triggers to produce too much amount of this substance. The other fat is trans fats which also has the identical type of effect.

This kind of bad substance is also contained in animal foods. There is none of it in vegetables and other plant foods. When in fat form the cholesterol does not dissolve in blood. Consequently, you need to utilize some other substances to get the fatty cholesterol to dissolve. That is where lipoproteins take its prominent role.

Lipoproteins are particular type of carriers. They can either be low-density lipoprotein (LDL) or high-density lipoprotein (HDL) with the former being bad for the body while the latter is good for the body.

The major carrier of bad cholesterol is LDL. When its level rises, the walls of your arteries may fill with plaque that will cause a reduction of the arteries. This in turn will damage free flow of blood to basic parts of the body.

When blood does not reach basic organs including the heart, you can be helpless of experiencing a heart attack or stroke. You will need to keep the levels of cholesterol at under 100 mg/dl to enjoy good health.

Alternatively, HDL or high-density lipoproteins will return cholesterol to the liver where it can be excreted. Thus, there is less opportunity of plaque build-up in the arteries, which shows lower health peril.

It follows then that to enjoy good health you need more HDL and less LDL cholesterol. The best technique to develop HDL is through work out and by getting rid of or drastically lowering intake of fats, more specially saturated fats and Trans fats.

What counts as overweight?

Maybe it’s just me but I am getting sick of being guilt tripped about health and fitness. The other week I was at a friend’s place and had a go on Wii fit, a game which until that point I had deliberately avoided like the plague. Now don’t get me wrong, I understand the importance of keeping fit and staying healthy. But as far as I was concerned the game was just a way for Nintendo to make money out of something you’d probably be doing anyway.

I’d heard from a lot of people that Wii fit makes out you’re much more unfit than you really are, and sure enough when I stepped (with some trepidation) onto the scales the game informed me that I was very overweight. Now, I don’t claim to be the picture of perfect fitness – I’m not supermodel skinny and although I do get regular exercise and eat healthily, I know I could be fitter. But I’m not fat, and I’m certainly not obese. It’s hardly surprising there have been so many complaints about Wii fit, considering how many people already have body issues thanks to the media constantly telling us that we should all look like Kate Moss or Angelina Jolie.

It’s true that obesity is a problem in society, especially when it’s children and young people, but is making everyone feel bad about themselves really the way to deal with it? The latest initiative being tested in Liverpool to combat obesity is to stop it before it becomes an issue, by giving all children under five free gym memberships. The existing scheme of free memberships for children of school age is one thing, but surely under fives should be getting all their necessary exercise from their normal daily play? And if they’re not then the real issue in society is surely not overweight children, but the question of why these children are not able to get their exercise through play anymore.

For myself, Wii fit succeeded in making me feel guilty for a grand total of five minutes. Then I remembered my healthy diet, regular exercise and that I don’t drink too much or eat fast food, and realised that I have nothing to feel guilty about. And I’ve since found a brilliant new way of staying fit without taking too much time out of my routine – FitFlops. Flip flops that are made to give you a workout and help keep you in shape as you go about your day – genius!
