Change – It’s A Process, Not a Single Event

Everyone faces continual change and transition in life.  Regardless of whether they are externally driven changes, like those initiated by geo-political events, or those internally generated by developmental processes, or other responses required to life events such as the birth of a new baby, graduating from college, family separation, divorce, or the death of a family member.

Unfortunately, life never stands still and as a result, neither can we.

Noted change management guru, William Bridges, has identified a simple three-step model for understanding and coping with the changes in our lives:

1. Endings

I appreciate Bridges’ model because it is one of the few that I’ve seen that reminds us that all changes – whether the “good” ones or the “bad” ones – start with something ending in our lives.  Regardless how much we might be excited about the change (e.g., going off to college, new job, getting married, moving), the new thing initially requires that we forfeit something. 

We necessarily have to give up the known, the usual, and the comfortable.  This might involve modifications to existing relationships, relocating from a place where we’ve lived for years, releasing our much-admired position of “authority” or being the “go-to” person at work.   Maybe we’ll have to release a social network that we’ve had for a lifetime.  Chums with whom we attended school.  A cozy house, with a wonderful backyard for entertaining, plenty of room for the children and all their friends.  Possibly it’s something as simple as a short commute to work.

But, regardless of the transition in our lives, probably the first thing(s) that we’ll notice are the things we must bid farewell.

2. Neutral Zone

The next stage of the model is probably the most difficult one.  We’ve given up all the established, secure, comfortable, accustomed things that we’ve trusted to simplify our daily decision-making processes, a support group we can share our lives with.  We’ve had to surrender all the tried and true “safety nets” we’ve integrated into our lives:  the insurance agent we’ve depended on, our child’s teacher that we’ve been able to have some really good parent-teacher conversations with, the church where we’ve become well established and have a strong support network.

The Neutral Zone is the phase where all the “old stuff” has to be left behind, but the necessary new support structures haven’t yet been created, or if built, they are still still being firmed up and rather fragile.

Living in the Neutral Zone can be rather intimidating as you live in a state of novelty, ambiguity and uncertainty.  But determination and perseverence are the secrets to a victorious trip through the Neutral Zone.

3. Beginnings

Little by little, over time, we establish things for our new existence.  If we’ve just started college, we’ve located all our classes, met the teachers, made some friends, and perhaps joined a fraternity, sorority or the tennis team.  If beginning a new employment, we’ve gotten over the initial shock of not even knowing where the water cooler and the rest rooms are, to being a full-fledged team member, and we’ve gained knowledge and job competence.  We’ve met our management team and many of our colleagues (perhaps we’re no longer the “newest” kid on the block).  We’ve probably found a new home or apartment, unpacked most (if not all) the boxes.  We know where the best food stores, drug stores, banks, car repair shops, beauty salons, and doctors are located. 

Things are finally settling into a daily pattern, and life is becoming more defined – and more predictable every day (although it will never become entirely static, or static).

We’re adapting and growing into our new roles and adjusting to our new state of affairs.

All this takes time.  The worst thing you can do is expect that it will transpire instantly – it won’t.  Give yourself, and your family, enough time and space, to assimilate the change – and they will!

I come to realise that a number of magazines provide useful articles on stress too. Most of the tips all focus on the same concepts – breathing, counting to 10 and taking personal and focus deeply on yourself. While all of those suggestions are probably more helpful to others than they are for me, I’d rather read some articles on stress elimination. I don’t even know if there are any suggestions out there for that, but if there are, sign me up!
