I shall take you to two wonderful cities within this short article.  We shall look at a destination within each of two great cities: Amsterdam and Washington, D.C., which both offer a unique site for gay tourists.

Amsterdam is one of Europe’s, indeed the world’s great cities.  Its aesthetic essence is partly due to the concentric circles of tranquil canals that ring the center of commerce and culture within the city.  Like nearly everything in Amsterdam, the canals are lovely but also serve a vital purpose.

Near the heart of the city, and definitely a part of its life is the unusual Homomonument of Amsterdam.  Using the infamous pink triangles that the Nazis forced upon the gay concentration camp prisoners in the years prior to and during the war, the monument is made up of a horizontal configuration of three pink granite triangles.  While the triangles imposed by the Nazis were meant to imply a shameful identity, the granite triangle of Amsterdam speak of the memory of the dark past, the struggles of current times and the guarded hopes of a future of greater respect and dignity for all people who have minority sexual orientations.  At various times of the year, the Homomonument serves as a meeting point for gays and straights, residents and tourists to gather for pay tribute, to share sad memories and to celebrate solidarity.

Less than four thousand miles west is the U.S. capital of Washington within the District of Columbia.  What most vacationers experience in a visit to this great city is the area surrounding the vast, open Mall.  The Mall is surrounded by the White House, the Capitol building which houses the legislative branch of government, various war memorials and the imposing Lincoln Memorial posed opposite the Capitol.  Much of the area is lined by the major museums of the Smithsonian.

Just off the Mall is another important destination for gay travel is the Holocaust Museum.  A moving memorial to all who suffered at the whims of the Nazis in the years before and during World War II, much of the museum and memorial is dedicated to the imprisoned and executed Jews, who were the most numerous of the victims by far.

Among the many groups honored in this magnificent interior are those who served almost as despised after-thoughts for the machines of bigotry and murder, including Gypsies, gays and other groups.  At this location a gay man will feel the shivers looking at the actual pink triangles sewn onto the shirts of our distant brothers and sisters.  When united in our minds with the pink granite triangles of the Homomonument, we may feel moved to remember the traditional promises inspired by the horrors of past persecution to never forget and to promise ourselves and future generations, “Never again!”

I recently came back from a one weeks self catering holiday in Dorset.  We had decided that rather than traveling to the beaches of the Costa Del Sol, we would save some cash, take a chance with the English weather conditions and drive to the pleasant beaches of Dorset.  It seems as if I was not the only one as Bournemouth beach was full and with all the things the region has on offer, it is no surprise.

Poole and Bournemouth are both entertaining areas of Dorset to visit but the county has so much more to offer up.  There were a wide range of sights and sounds and sites to see.  My selection of the different tourist attractions would have to be Compton Acres, Farmer Palmer’s and Bournemouth beach.  I had such a pleasant time at all these destinations and would extremely advocate them to people.

This was one of the grounds that I made up one’s mind that my kin and I would go on holiday in a holiday cottage in Dorset instead of a hotel.  This meant we could holiday in a dwelling where we felt snug and available to do what we want.  It was also a good base from where we would travel to the localized holidaymaker sights easy.  We were lucky enough that our holiday cottage was situated under 30 minutes away from all of these tourist destinations.

The English cottage we stayed in was adjacent to a local public house which we regularly attended, where we gained a friendship with the pub landlord.  We found out from the landlord that Dorset cottages were extremely common in the country and that he frequently met people such as us that stay in them.  If you are considering of taking a holiday in Dorset then I would advocate staying in cottages in Dorset.  The welcome you will get from the people is marvelous, it is a good deal forgiving on the wallet than a trip abroad and you will go home feeling laid-back and invigorated.

The Canary Islands have been attracting visitors to their glistening shores for many years. It’s hard to see why anyone would not want to visit these perfect island paradise packages. Yet, even these holiday gems have been suffering during these difficult economic times.
